The next event involving The Bluebirds is
CHOLSEY GOLF SOCIETY'S RACE NIGHT
CHOLSEY GOLF SOCIETY'S RACE NIGHT
The Golf Society has supported Cholsey Bluebirds for a number of years and hopes to donate a beer & food hamper worth around £100 as a prize at our Tournament Raffle.
Dave Evans, the Raffle organiser is also Secretary of the Golf Society and all we ask from the Bluebirds' parents is that you make every effort to come along on the evening and join in with the "fun". Entrance is free and bets are only 50p so nobody is going to win or lose a fortune. It is very much a fun family event. The golf Society have established a tradition going back nearly 10 years, of making donations to local good causes - as well as The Bluebirds, they will be giving at least £100 each to CHIPS (Cholsey's own Summer Playscheme) and CHOKO (sponsoring a barrel at their Beer Festival in September). On top of they, Cholsey Primary School PTA organise the bar and food, keeping the profits. They have raised over £1500 since they were invited to participate in this way. Altogether, The Golf Society through their RACE NIGHT and CHARITY CHRISTMAS RAFFLE have raised in excess of £6000 for over 10 local groups and organisations - a record they are immensely proud of - can you help their cause this year ? QUIZ NIGHT The date for our QUIZ NIGHT is FRIDAY 3rd MARCH 2017 at the Scout Hall behind the Red Lion. This is a really fun night out for parents, wives, husbands, friends and supporters - Glenn Hawkins ensures that the questions don't stretch the "little grey cells" too much, and his wit, together with the banter that flies around, is sure to put a smile on your face. Tables of 6 enjoy and tasty meal, prepared by our very own U11s Manager & MASTER CHEF RUNNER-UP, Dave Miners. It's the cheapest Quiz Night around, just £6 per person. There will be a "Jubilee" Theme to the evening and KAREN SILKSTONE has already received inquiries from 5 teams. It would be great to at least ONE team from each age group. To book, contact her at : k.silkstone@ntlworld.com For last year's Report and Results see below. Dave Evans Posted 9 Feb 2017
QUIZ EVENING 2016 A fabulous evening of fun and laughter was had by over 70 vociferous adults on Friday. We eventually had 12 teams with 2 dropping out at the last moment - a shame because "Karen" had promised to to something special if we had had more than the 13 tables last year. Still, there's always next year ! Our compere and quiz master for the evening, GLENN HAWKINS (our Chairman), produced his usual array of "interesting " choices of questions, particularly the Music Round - DELILAH once again reverberated around the Scout Hall. |
|
MEL, Glenn's faithful and obedient wife, collected the scores and was extremely efficient, as always. Glenn, on the other hand, got in a mix-up of how many players on a cricket pitch at any one time in one of his questions - he was soon put right by MR CHAPMAN though !
As you can see by the scores below, it was a very tight affair, going down to the wire as they say.
The PURPLE FA had waited until the last round, General Knowledge, to play their "joker". As it happened, it turned out all smiles for them, much to their delight but the faces of the Runners-Up , GRIN & BEAR IT- said it all - great choice of team name though !
Dave Miners, one of the original Masterchef contestants, once again produced the goods - superb tasting chilli-con-carne - although half of one bowl did end up on the kitchen floor - Dave forgot to unplug the slow cooker as he attempted to bring it to the serving hatch - it's amazing how 7 glasses of wine can affect your co-ordination and vision !
Not to be outdone, another Dave (Evans this time) - who had only had ONE glass of beer at the time, decided to knock a full bottle of wine onto the floor (well he is an old-age pensioner now and his eyesight, hearing, heart, brain, hand-control, etc. ain't what they used to be) and then Tom Barker tried to emulate him on his table but was unsuccessful - only spilled half the bottle - and it didn't smash !
It really was a brilliant evening and hopefully, we will have even more teams entering next year.

GOLDEN JUBILEE Souvenir Booklet
As well as the CELEBRATION DAY (below), another idea put forward is to have a Souvenir Booklet containing past and present players’ memories/thoughts, together with a host of old photographs and, possibly, as many records of results/league tables/etc. from the past 50 years.
For this to happen we need YOUR HELP. If you or any family member has been associated with the Bluebirds over the years, we would be thrilled to hear from you. Contact : dave.vans@virgin.net
Dave will pass on your e-mails/photos to the Souvenir Booklet Editor(s) - yet to be decided, as hopefully, your responses could involve a lot of work. IS THERE A CREATIVE PARENT WHO MIGHT BE WILLING TO TAKE ON THIS ROLE ?
Dave Miners has already done some research and found a photo of the VERY FIRST TEAM back in 1967, together with a number of others from the 1970s.

GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION DAY
to include our Annual Presentation Evening
This will take place on the afternoon and evening of SATURDAY 15th JULY 2017 (2pm - 11pm) in the Cholsey Village Pavilion and on the Front Recreation Field where the large football pitch is at present.
PLEASE PUT THE DATE IN YOUR DIARY NOW.
Although the format has yet to be finalised it is hope to have a number of family/mixed age/veterans/parents 5-aside Tournaments and other fun competitions during the afternoon for the Bluebirds & from the whole village.
Early evening we shall have our Annual Presentations to each team and after, we shall have a number of local bands/musicians/groups providing some excellent entertainment.
The event will be completely free and we hope you and the whole village will join in the celebrations on this very special occasion. I'm not sure how long other present clubs/organisations/groups within Cholsey have been going, but for a small local club to reach 50 years is an outstanding milestone.
We have a sub-committee formed from present managers but would welcome further support from as many parents as possible, especially if you have any expertise in planning/organising such a large scale event.
Our first meeting will follow the next full committee meeting on Tuesday 13th December at The Fairmile Sports & Social Club (Morning Star) in Papist way, at 9:00pm.

The dates for our Summer Jubilee Tournament are :
Saturday 27th May 2017
0930 start : Under 7s (5 aside), Under 11s (6 a-side) & Under Boys 15s (6 a-side)
1430 start : Under 9s (6 aside), Under 13s (6 a-side) & Under Boys 16s (5 a-side)
Sunday 28th May 2017
0930 start : Under 8s (5 aside), Under 10s (6 aside) & Under 12s (6 a-side)
1430 start : Boys Under 14s (6 a-side), Under 21s (5 a-side)
Please make every effort to keep this weekend free as we will need all squads and parents to both enter teams and help prepare for the event beforehand and on the two days. It is our main fund-raising event and its continued success keeps our subscriptions down (we are one of the cheapest clubs in Oxfordshire) and ensures we will continue for another 50 years.
