Let's hope his managerial skills this season equal his golfing ones  - mind you, they're usually up and down, side to side and inconsistent  . . . . but on his day, can be awesome !

Summary of 2020/21 Season as U17s

What a great season the boys have had : P18 W10 D5 L3  Goals 58/34 : finishing 3rd in the League just 1pt behind 2nd place and 3 behind 1st. Had we won 2 of our 5 drawn matches (one when we were 6-2 up with just 20 minutes left) we would have finished top – but that’s football for you. It’s been a learning experience for us all at times, including me.
With the addition of 2 new quality players back in September and 2 more during the season, together with those already established and much improved availability, the whole team has really developed into an attacking force who on their day, can match any team in the League. We had the best defensive record and the top and fourth best goal-scorers in the division with 25 and 18 goals respectively.
However, the really excellent news is that at least 16 of the squad of 19 wish to carry on for one more year as U18s, so, hopefully, my last and 13th year involvement as a manager with Cholsey Bluebirds will be an even more memorable one . . .  13 is my lucky number !
The 100% commitment, enthusiasm, determination, high skill level and above all, excellent sportsmanship from EVERY player, has made me a very proud manager indeed. The boys have been a credit to themselves, the Team and the Club.
I would also once again thank not only our kit sponsor WINTERBROOK PROPERTY AGENTS, but also, ALL my parents for their equally impressive commitment, enthusiasm and support throughout this very long extended season – I hope you all feel it has been worthwhile . . . I certainly do.

Summary of 2019/20 Season as U16s

As usual, a mixed season : P18  W6  L10  D2  Goals 42-74. However, it was full of stunning goals, unbelievable saves, superb flowing passing movements, plus, numerous glaring misses and quite a few diabolical defensive mistakes.
On the positive side though, everyone in every match gave their all as a team, as was clearly displayed against Kidlington. We played with just 9 – late injuries and illnesses – and actually scored first but down 1-3 at HT. We eventually lost 1-9 but their last 5 goas came in the final 15 minutes when 2 of the 9 had further injuries (but stayed on the pitch), so we were in effect playing with just 7.
I could not have been more proud of the boys as they crawled and hobbled off the pitch at FT. There is no doubt in my mind, but for availability issues and injuries (struggled the first half of the season), the team was capable of pushing for promotion but ended up mid-table – they deserved better for all their efforts and commitment.
Having said that, I feel very privileged to be associated with such a great group of lads – enthusiastic and on their day, very talented.
We are all looking forward to next season with almost everyone re-joining – they are clearly not yet fed up with a balding old-timer, way past his sell buy date !
I would also like to thank the boys’ parents for their continued support in so many ways throughout this season – they too are a great bunch of . . . .  oldies !  Lastly, on behalf of the team, I am very grateful to our sponsor, WINTERBROOK PROPERTY AGENTS, next season will be their 4th as Kit Sponsors.

Summary of 2018/19 Season as U15s

It has been a season of mixed emotions – great wins, hard fought draws and some disappointing defeats. Although having a squad of 18, we have never been able to put out a settled side – due to unprecedented availability issues, injuries (never had so many) and illnesses too. However, every player has given 100% effort when on the pitch, none more so than at Banbury in our last match, when we needed a win to avoid the possibility of relegation – we won 3-2 (had lost 6-1 to them earlier in the season).
The full League & Cup record is P22  W7  D3  L12, scoring 57 goals and conceding 97 - the highlights being a 6-0 win away to Cumnor Minors (they finished 3rd in the league of 9 teams, we finished 7th) and a superb Cup run, losing to the eventual winners Goring Robins in the S-F.
I am really pleased to say that 16 of the present squad have put pen to paper and decided to renew their contracts, putting up with me for another year – so I am already looking forward to next September. I am extremely confident the team will achieve the undoubted potential and success they richly deserve.
Finally, my grateful thanks go to WINTERBROOK for their continued sponsorship and to all the parents for supporting the team in so many ways, especially Karl Hewstone, who organised the warm-up sessions before matches, and Peter Sharp, for his excellent linesman duties.
The enthusiasm and commitment of both the boys and their parents is what makes being a manager of a Cholsey Bluebirds Team so enjoyable and rewarding . . . . . . . A few “wins” always go down well too.

Summary of 2017/18 Season as U14s

After our promotion last season back up to the “C” League, expectations were high. Sadly though, due to a number of issues, we lost our first 8 league games. As is usual in football in these cases, an emergency board meeting was called, resulting, as is usual in these cases, a unanimous “vote of confidence” in the manager. And we all knew what that meant.
Once into 2018, however, things began to turn around. The squad clearly didn’t want their beloved and aged manager (well past his sell-by-date) to get the “push” and they started to play “as a team”, displaying great enthusiasm, dogged determination and a fair amount of skill too. The consequences were: in the League we won 2, drew 2 & lost 2.
With luck, and we didn’t have any – sitters went-a-begging, bobbling balls, the woodwork, opposition keepers having a blinder, you name it, we missed it – we could easily have had another 15 goals and 9 more points. Even though we had improved, we still ended up second from bottom in the League and our fate now rests with the League Secretary as to which division we will be playing in come September. We hope to stay in the “C” League as we have recruited 4, possibly 5, skilful players from a Berkshire club that has folded.
The highlight of the year though, was undoubtedly beating Goring Robins 3-2 in our Cup Quarter-Final match, and that’s after they beat us 8-1 in our first game of the season back in September. It had everything – last ditch tackles, superb goals, hitting the woodwork, brilliant saves – you name it, it had it ! Despite the same level of effort and commitment in our S-F against Cumnor, we were beaten by the better team on the day 3-1.
Some good news is that Julian Walley at WINTERBROOK Estate Agents, who have sponsored our kit for the past 2 seasons, has generously agreed to do so for another 2 years – our grateful thanks to him.
I can’t thank the team enough for their faith in me and must also mention what a great group of supportive parents I have – THANK YOU ALL – you make an old man very happy.

Summary of 2016/17 Season as U13s

With the season split into two mini ones, we almost gained promotion last December, finishing 3rd in the D League. However, this year saw us finish second and so we finally move up to the C League come next September – nothing less than the boys deserve for all their outstanding efforts both individually and as a team - scoring 56 goals and conceding just 13 in 7 matches. We are all very much looking forward to the challenge of facing tougher opposition next season.

SUMMER 2016 TOURNAMENT PHOTOS
Sam's mum is a Professional Photographer - I think you can tell by the quality of her "snaps" below at some of the 2016 Summer Tournaments we entered. Compared to our "League" season, we did brilliantly - entering TWO teams at all Tournaments (Marston / Ours / Crowmarsh / Didcot Town), with both teams reaching the Plate Semi-Finals at 3 of them.
She was going to be our "OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER" of the team but sadly Sam is not rejoining for the 16/17 season.

If any parents would like a copy of any of the photos, let Dave know.

Summary of the 2015/16 Season

Well, what can I say about this year . . . glad it’s over ! In the first half of the season in the “B” league, although we struggled a bit, we weren’t outplayed by any team, but ended up being relegated after winning just the one game. Sadly for us, in the “C” league in the New Year, things went from bad to worse . . . lost all 7 games . . . relegated again.
However, just looking at the stats, gives you a very distorted view of exactly how well the team played. I lost count of the number of times we hit the woodwork, the number of superb saves opposition keepers made, the number of efforts just over the bar or wide of the post and . . . the number of missed open goals. It just wasn’t our year !
Despite the obvious disappointment, every one of the squad played in the true Bluebirds' tradition . . . always giving 100% and NEVER . . . EVER . . . giving up. They should be proud of themselves . . . as their manager, I certainly am.

DAVE EVANS (Manager)

Summary of the 2014-15 Season

The team exceeded all my expectations before Christmas, winning 6 of their 7 League matches to top the Table and gain promotion to the "B" League in the New Year.
Following losing the first 2 League games in the “B” League, we won the next three to make ourselves safe from going back down to the "C" League after just one campaign - whatever happened in the final 2 games.
As it turned out, we lost both - Didcot Casuals were too strong for us on the day and the last game, against Chalgove Cavaliers was unbelievable  with the final result 5-7 after being 0-4 down at half-time.
The team’s sportsmanship is brilliant, never questioning decisions - they are a credit to themselves, the team and the Club.
Although we shall be losing a few players we are very much looking forward to next season already.
